    Small gifts…Big impact

One Sunday, a young girl handed me $27. She said, “I want to give this to Casino Road Ministries. I’ve been saving up for a television and wanted to tithe to Casino Road Ministries.” These words moved me and I was in awe that a young girl would be so dedicated to save up her allowance money to buy a television and then give some of it to support ministry that helps children.

God used this 10-year-old girl to remind me of a great biblical principal that small acts of kindness, faith, giving, love and gifts, in time, will produce a crop of faith, hope, growth and change in the hearts of the people we serve.

Her giving reminds me how much a generous gift has the potential to produce an impact in the kingdom of God. Jesus taught if we have faith as the size of a mustard seed, we’d be able to move mountains. A mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds, but once sown it takes over the area where planted.

Many of the volunteers who serve in our ministries are an example of this great parable. They give 1-2 hours of their time each week to serve 135 children on Casino Road . It may not seem like alot of time to make an impact, but the time they spend over the year will reap a great impact.

I ran into two individuals I’ve known for nine years. One of these individual’s is a smart, energetic, and creative 19-year-old lady named Faye (name changed). I met Faye when she was 10 years-old at a homework club I held at an apartment complex. Faye lived with her mother and younger sister. Her mother was a chronic alcoholic and was rarely home, so Faye basically raised herself. She was one of five children I spent time with during the week, went on field trips during the summer and outreach events. In 2002, Faye accepted Jesus at an outreach event. Over the years, I’ve heard Faye was using drugs and living on the streets or ‘couch-surfing’. Whenever I thought of Faye, I’d pray God would remind her of the things she learned and experienced at club. After four years, I spoke to her at a Jack in the Box. She’s working as a barista, going to school at Everett Community College, and has an apartment on Casino Road.

Then there’s Henry (name changed). We met when he was 14-years-old. During homework club, he was the kid who caused the most trouble. He would argue with me about the rules, throw objects at my vehicle and bully other kids. After two years, his behavior changed and he began to be a positive helper. Each Wednesday, we’d spend an hour talking about his faith in Jesus, his family and his dreams (one was to be an apartment manager). I was blessed to see him be the first member from his family to graduate High school. Now, Henry is 24-years-old and living his dream as an apartment manager on Casino Road. He’s spreading the word about CRM by asking managers to let us start homework clubs on their properties.

We appreciate you for partnering with us to sow seeds of hope, faith, education and love into the lives of children on Casino Road.

    Praises

After months of planning, announcements and recruiting volunteers, we started homework club at Horizon Elementary. Ten students showed up eager to receive homework help from three volunteers.

One of our 2nd grade boys, who attends Homework club – Bluffs, won first place in the State Spelling Bee.

    Prayer Request

Pray for CRM, our children and volunteers any time you pass by Casino Road.

CRM needs two volunteers to help grade school students with homework and reading on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at Horizon Elementary. If you are interested in being a homework and reading helper, please send an email to info@casinoroadministries.org.

Pray for the CRM board as we seek to fill an open seat.

Please continue to pray for the 41 volunteers who serve through CRM. Pray that God continues to use them to make an impact in the lives of the students we work with each week.
